新刊です。 The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Center for Bioethicsに『The Immortal Life of Henrietta lacks』の著者Rebecca Sklootさんが講演に来てくださいました。お話によると…

５０年ほど前に一人の黒人女性Henrietta lacksさんから癌細胞が採取され、HeLa細胞（HeLa Cell、ヒーラ細胞）と名づけられました。この細胞は、現在でも実験に利用されいます。HeLa細胞は、ヘルペス、白血病、血友病、ポリオ、アルツハイマー病等をはじめ宇宙実験にも利用されただけでなく、商業的にも利用されました。
  
それにもかかわらず、Henriettaさんのご家族は一切の経済的・医療的恩恵を受けることもなく、貧困のため教育も十分受けられない状態で、病気を抱えていても医療保険すらない状態だそうです。さらに、これらの細胞は適切なインフォームド・コンセントを得て採取されものではなく、ご家族はHenriettaさんの死後２０年ほど経って始めて彼女の細胞が現代医学にどれほ大きく貢献したのかを知ったそうです。

Sklootさんが講演の最後に、クリスチャンであるHenriettaさんの娘DeborahさんがHeLa細胞を目の当たりにして、細胞となって生き続ける母しかし同時に母を死に追いやった癌細胞、母の魂と細胞について抱いた複雑な思いについて語って下さったのが、特に印象的でした。

HeLa細胞よく知られていても、その細胞が採取された人やその人の家族についての物語はほとんど知りません。本書を通して、これらの人々の物語をきいてみてはいかがでしょう。
